What I mean is, jailing people removes them from play and makes them ineligible to be lynched. If the jailer was scum, why would he knowingly jail town when he could use it to save his friends?

To get rid of town who could be going after him, I guess. And we don't know how the ability works. It has only activated day 2 and 5, so there's probably some restrictions.

Unfortunately, it was the only valid play, with my ability taken into account. Without knowing what activates this 'hidden' ability, we would've completely been at the scum's mercy, as without it, I would've been lynched with one single vote. The scum would only need to place one vote on a town in the other dimension, then vote me. Two townies up for vote, and not even Celever can make us avoid a town lynch. Had I known the details of the secret mechanic, things might have been different.
